I sell my Ford Probe and buy a Trek bicycle. The car had become too tiresome. A machine with thirst for gasoline. My body is strong. The longest ride I have each week is from Long Beach to Huntington Beach for therapy. It takes an hour each way, to and from. The ride is beautiful. Down the coast on the bike path in the sand. Magnificent sunsets. God with a paintbrush. Rothko canvases. Did Rothko have God? If he did, would he still have slit his wrists?
Later, I will need to travel farther. From Long Beach to West Hollywood for meetings. My sponsor in the Twelve Step program is Maud, and she is lovely and sure-footed and lives in West Hollywood. I could figuratively feel her foot on my backside when I had done stupid.
I sign up to take motorcycle safety training classes. Typically, I do things ass backward in true alcoholic fashion; I buy a motorcycle before I can ride it. I recall the time I bought Rollerblades. Jack had suggested to me to rent a pair of blades before buying to make certain I could indeed blade. I didn’t listen, once again thinking I know best. I bought a pair of Rollerblades for $350. And what do I know? I know I tried to blade and repeatedly fell down. I learned I couldn’t do it, and the $350 got lost in my trunk. Years later, I would give the blades away.
So now I own a motorcycle I can’t ride. Fortunately, I was a natural. The man who taught the motorcycle safety training class was surprised I had never ridden before.
In one exercise, I watch this woman rocket from her seat over her handlebars, into the shrubs. It was like watching a cartoon in slow motion. I laugh hard. This is not a nice thing to do. She is automatically eliminated from riding any longer. She leaves with her husband.
Motorcycling is fabulous. The original bike I bought for a couple hundred dollars proves to be a dud. I get rid of it and purchase a Honda I name Gertrude after Gertrude Stein. Both the bike and Gertrude are sexy in their own ways. The wide girth of the tank reminds me of the wide girth of Gertrude.
The worst thing about wearing a helmet is sneezing. The best thing is the day I crashed, it saved my life. I had been riding for a good three years before I bit it. The choice was hit the dog that ran out into the middle of the road, or hit the truck. I chose the truck.
The day it happened, I was wearing high heels instead of boots. The pavement took a large chunk of flesh near my ankle. Other than that, I bruised my shin badly. That was it. Grandma Morgan was glad I crashed without really getting hurt. My bike was totaled, and she was thrilled I didn’t ride after that. Riding was freeing. Being in a car again was initially claustrophobic.
