A computational explanation that purports to explain a given step in a computational process in terms of earlier computational stages therefore is a program explanation; the earlier stages are causally inefficacious, though explanatorily relevant, for the explanandum, with all the genuine causal processes taking place at the electronic level. Jackson and Pettit believe that this approach will save explanations in the special sciences, including psychology:... though we shall not explore the cases here, it seems to extend to explanations in common sense and the special sciences: for example, to explanations in sociology which invoke a property like group-cohesion, to explanations in psychology which invoke attitudinal contents as causally relevant properties, and to explanations in biology which appeal to a property such as that of maximizing inclusive fitness. In all such cases it is hard to see how the explanations can have the interest they clearly possess other than through being the programming variety.24
