Chapter Eight

Every new day and every encounter with Lucas brought Mike closer to the young man he used to be. From the day they’d painted sets together and Lucas had allowed Mike’s exploring hand to roam over his trouser-clad legs, a change began inside him. Mike felt this odd sense of thawing taking place in his mind and body. The grip of fear and distrust he hadn’t been able to dislodge, although the Andrews clan had gone a long way toward easing it, began to dissolve. When an entire day passed and he realized he had not relived so much as a flash of a bad memory, Mike began to believe he could become a whole man one day.

And sweet, loyal, kind Lucas was the reason for it. Mike spent even more time at the theater than normal in order to be certain to see his friend as much as possible. It seemed Lucas must have set aside some of his normal duties in order to show up at the Extravaganza for rehearsals and much more. He was constantly on hand to accompany the solo singers when they wanted extra practice. He helped paint things, or went on errands to purchase prop items Christopher or Dion would suddenly decide were absolutely essential to the production. All this brought him into Mike’s orbit, and despite these tasks, there was plenty of time for them to spend alone.

Lucas never asked for more than conversation, though his heated gazes certainly let Mike know that his advances would be welcome. Mike couldn’t stop thinking about Lucas’s brazen offer to him in the courtyard that day.

“I volunteer myself to you. Outside or inside in private, clothed, naked, I’ll do whatever you wish, whenever you wish it. Send word at two in the morning, and I’ll drag myself to the spot immediately.”

Those explicit words and the images they provoked whirled in his head nearly constantly and brought his body to life with an ease Mike never would have believed possible. He had thought himself dead to that sort of excitement. His cock apparently thought differently and wanted things he wasn’t sure he was prepared to give it.

Now as Lucas entered the theater door, his offer echoed in Mike’s mind once more. “I’ll do whatever you wish, whenever you wish it.”

Oh, how he wished it! He would like to toss down the costume he was embellishing with sequins, because he’d somehow gotten pressed into service as costumer at the last minute, and rush over to throw his arms around Lucas to welcome him. Mike had witnessed much of that sort of behavior in his time with theater folk. Christopher embraced his lover and the theater’s owner, Simon Harris, at the drop of a hat. Uncle Dion and his dear companion, Billie, often held hands while they talked—or even argued—together. Only Will Andrews and his lover, Hugh St. John, were a bit more reserved when they came to visit, as public displays didn’t suit either of their temperaments.

Just a welcoming hug between friends, Mike’s inner voice begged.
