Later that afternoon, the surroundings become cold. Voices change and the object of beauty is brown and round. I can still hear Miss Scott’s voice but it is faint. I walk out to the wood court… Miss Scott is the finest white woman I have ever…

“Reed, what in the hell are you thinking about? Get your ass at the top of the stack,” Coach bellows. He shocks me back into the reality of the cramped gym. I look up and stare at the backboards; someone should clean them.

I run to the top of the stack, thinking about the next move the club will make in the school. Everyone else has been in place in our offense: the double stack. I look up and find a perfect square of individuals beneath me: two on the right side and two on the left. Smitty for some reason is in the stack. I look at Coach. If Smitty is in the stack, then I must have been daydreaming at center court for a long time. Coach’s face is red as hell and there are rocks where his jaws used to be. He is marching out toward me. He stands there, with his arms folded, watching my every move.
