Erin heard the crunch of gravel and looked up from watering the plants to see her aunt approach. âHi. Where are the kids?â
âWatching a video in the living room. Still no word from Carol?â Tess asked.
âNo, and Iâm worried. I was concerned when I knocked on her door this morning and found she hadnât come home last night. But now I donât know what to think. No matter how much fun she had last night, she would have at least called by now. You know how protective she is about Amy.â
âI know. Iâm worried, too. Maybe we should call someone.â
âWho would I call? Sheâs not scheduled to work. Sheâs not answering her cell. I donât know who this âMystery Manâ is.â Erin stooped down and wound up the hose. âWhy did she have to be so secretive? I canât believe sheâs been seeing this guy for months and the first I hear about it is Amyâs birthday party.â Frustration laced her words. âNow I donât have a clue where to start looking for her.â
âMaybe we should call the police.â
Erin stood and pulled off her gardening gloves. âAnd tell them what? That she left last night looking like a million bucks to go on a special date and we havenât seen her since? Somehow, I donât think theyâll be too concerned.â
âWell, we have to do something. We canât just sit here.â
Erin sighed. âThatâs exactly what we have to do. Until she calls or shows up or something.â
They both heard the doorbell.
âIâll get it,â Erin said. âWhy donât you go inside and check on the kids?â She hurried around the side of the house, shielded her eyes against the sun and grinned when she recognized the man on the porch. âHi. I wasnât expecting you.â
Tony came down the steps. His grave expression as he approached gave her pause.
Tell me nothingâs wrong. Tell me I have a vivid imagination and you came by to see meâ¦or Jackâ¦or that youâre here for some Irish coffee.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asked.
âHave you heard from Carol?â
Erinâs stomach clenched. âNo. Why?â She shoved her hands in her pockets to still the sudden trembling in them.
âWhen was the last time you spoke with her?â
âLast night. Right before she left for her date. But you know that already. You were here.â She took a deep breath. âTony, whatâs going on? Youâre scaring me.â
âSheâs missing.â
âI know that, but how did youâ¦?â An uneasy feeling crept over her. âWhatâs happened?â
He slid a protective arm around her shoulders and gently guided her toward the house. âAs far as I know, nothingâs happened to her. Letâs go inside and talk.â
They no sooner stepped into the foyer than the children raced toward them, hugging Tonyâs legs and shouting his name.
âTony, are you going to watch me ride my bike?â Jack asked.
âMe, too,â Amy demanded.
Tony squatted and closed both children in a bear hug. âIâd love to play with you guys,â he said, an unfamiliar gruffness in his voice. âBut itâll have to wait until next time. I have to go back to work in a few minutes.
