Early the next morning the fire marshal and structural engineer deemed that the fire was isolated and hadn’t damaged the structure. The third floor had to be taped off but the rest of the B&B could be used. Since my bedroom still smelled smoky, I decided to head outside with the journal. Wally and Wilma sniffed around in the enclosure. Wilma lay down first, flopping over on her side in the sun while her brother patrolled, button black nose twitching as he investigated his territory. I checked to make sure their water bowl was full and then settled myself in the chair. The bright morning sun was helping dispel the uneasy feeling that had been lurking around me like a bad smell since the night before.

I shook off my sandal, propped the beautiful driftwood walking stick to one side, and rubbed Wilma’s belly with my toe.

Mathis had heated my blood last night until I’d forgotten we were up in a tree, or in the middle of a crisis. The world had condensed into the two of us. I had only had that experience once before.

With Damien.

The thought of him had been like a bucket of ice water. How dare I kiss Mathis and feel him up when Damien was still missing? What a faithless thing to do.

My heart longed for Damien. He loved a quiet morning and lingering over a cup of coffee and a flakey pastry. He had a way of filling up the space.

When I finally felt settled enough, I turned to the book. The leather cracked as I opened it and began to read.

Over the next hour, I lost myself in Mary Adam’s world. A very different place from the world that I lived in. Mary was the last in a long line of healers, similar to Fran Shevchenko, the hedge witch. Her tradition was passed down through the family line, from mother to daughter, but Mary had only one son.

The son of a shifter. I read her account of her newborn son, the second English person born in the new world.

Harvey will be alpha after Lucas. The seer in our coven in England has foretold it. Secrecy is of the utmost importance. Any of the mortals would condemn us as devil worshipers or demons if they knew our truth. Sometimes I wish they would all leave us in peace. His father offered to take the boy away, to raise him with the pack but Alexander believes…

“Wait, hold up a step,” I grumbled and flipped the page wondering if I had misread that line. The baby’s father was Lucas. So who the hell was Alexander and why was he in on the shifter shenanigans?

“Alexander believes it is safer for the pack if we stay near the protection of the coven, for the good of the baby. As a native to these shores, our lover knows of the dangers of the place. He insists that as ignorant as the mortals can be, they are better than what awaits us out there.
