NoMa Summer Screen

NoMa BID

Every Monday night throughout the long days of summer, Screen on the Green shows free flicks on an enormous movie screen placed among the monuments. Showings begin at sunset (around 8pm) but people arrive earlier to secure a good spot. Bring a blanket, a picnic basket (minus any alcohol, which is prohibited), and enjoy films like Dr. No, The Apartment, and Superman. Movies play come rain or shine, except in extreme weather, such as excessive heat or lightning.

NoMA Summer Screen – During the summer The NoMA (North of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District also hosts a free summer-long outdoor film festival in Northeast DC. A campy vibe sets the tone for the festival and a few food trucks always show up to sell cheap eats. Bond, James Bond, was the star of all 16 films in 2008. The audience got in the mood for all things 007 by cheering on contestants in the Oddjob look-alike contest as they attempted to toss their bowler hats onto statues.

Capitol Riverfront Front Row Films – This film festival takes place near Nationals Park in Southeast. Like the NoMA Summer Screen fest, the series has a community vibe.

Paddle or Cruise the Potomac River

If you’re hankering to get out on the water, you can rent canoes and kayaks by the hour or by the day at Thompson Boat Center. From Thompson’s it’s an easy paddle to Theodore Roosevelt Island (below) or the Georgetown waterfront. Landlubbers can rent bikes here, too (mid-Mar–Sept) for a ride along the C&O Canal towpath or the Rock Creek National Park bike path (see Parks and Gardens). If you're not feeling quite energetic enough, take a sightseeing cruise on the river. Check out the special trips from Potomac Riverboat company (www.potomacriverboatco.com), who can organize canine cruises for your four-legged friends or pirate cruises for the kids.

Rock Creek Park Horse Center

Just off Military Rd., on Glover Rd., NW, (next door to The Nature Center in Rock Creek Park). 202-362-0117. www.rockcreekhorsecenter.com. Tue–Fri noon–6pm and 9am–5pm on weekends. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

If you need a break from all the marble statues and painted masterpieces head over to Rock Creek Park’s equestrian center and visit the horses or maybe even take a ride. Guided trail rides ($35 for one hour) and pony rides for children ($20 for 15 minutes) are given in spring, summer, and early fall. Reservations are a must as there are a limited number of ride slots each week and they tend to fill up quickly. You don’t have to have any riding experience to participate but you must wear the helmet provided by the Center and compliment your horse as you trot through the park.
