Pathways from Identification to Consciousness

A central question that emerges from these interviews is, how did so many of the respondents progress from simply identifying with their multiple “stigmatized” groups to developing a feeling of empowerment and commitment to political mobilization? When asked, many of the respondents saw several pathways contributing to their political transformation. Although their overall consciousness was informed by lived experience, respondents noted two particular paths that facilitated the “jolt” of recognition of previously undetected discriminatory treatment. One jolt was their exposure to knowledge as they entered higher education; the other was exposure to political activism as enacted by women (and some men) in their lives.
