“Where the hell is this girl at?” I asked aloud while glancing at my Rolex.

I paced back and forth, worried as hell, trying to figure out where the hell Niya was. It’s going on well after midnight and her phone was going straight to voice mail. I hadn’t spoken to her since earlier this evening when I was headed to a game around six. She told me she was heading out with her friend for drinks and that she’d see me at the house after that, and after I came from the game. Well, I been here since about quarter till ten or so, and I hadn’t seen her yet. After twelve thirty rolled around, I decided to take a shower and call it a night. By now, I just assumed she got too drunk and stayed over at a friend’s or some shit. I headed to the bedroom and stripped down to nothing but my boxers, and just as I was ready to slide them off, my phone rang. I still had my Airpods in, so when it rung I just instantly tapped one of them to answer because I assumed it was her calling.

“Hello, Niya? Where you at—”

“No, this ain’t no damn Niya. You knew that, though, Jonathan,” the caller gushed. I shuddered and wished I never even answered.

“What do you want? I’m busy right now.”

“Oh, are you? Well, if you were that busy you wouldn’t have picked up the phone.”

“I thought you were my girlfriend calling. I didn’t even bother to look at the caller ID. Had I, though, you would have gotten ignored, trust me,” I shot.

“Hmph, so I see you still keeping up this little rouse as a straight man or whatever, but how far do you think you’re gonna go with—”

“Listen, I already told you to stop with the bullshit, ite! I don’t know why you keep trying to take me there, but it’s not going to work. You dead to me, so lose my number!” I yelled before hanging up.

I quickly went to the block caller option and blocked all calls and texts, which was something I should have done way before. I sighed and tossed my hands behind my head in frustration, pacing the room. A few minutes into me being lost in my own world, I heard a soft voice behind me.

“Well, I thought you’d be sleeping by now.”

“Niya, where the hell you been? I was worried! You know we got to get up early to go get the baby tomorrow and bring him home!”

“Yeah, I—I know, Free. I just—had a crazy evening. I had to cool off at my mom’s house and I fell asleep,” she slurred.

“Are you alright? What happened?”

“I’m cool. I just, umm—got into it with my ex and then my friend, so—yea—yeah. I’ma lay down now.”

“Wait, what did you get into it with your ex about? I thought you cut off all contact with him.”

“I did, but he was upset that the baby isn’t his. I had to have that discussion with him.
