Chapter 10
Marshall paced at the bottom of the stairs. He could ask himself those same questions all over again: why had he let Margot talk him into this? What was he thinking sending for a mail-order bride? How had he been so wrong about what she would be like?
But heâd been over that again and again.
He tugged on the ruffles tickling his neck. He felt absolutely ridiculous in this getup. But Margot said it was the thing to wear. Heâd want to look nice, didnât he? He wanted to impress the bride coming from Missouri, wouldnât he?
He tried to turn off the churning questions in his mind with no success.
He turned and paced back in the other direction. He glanced at the clock on the hotel counter. Five minutes after the hour.
She had changed her mind. He was sure of it. She wasnât going to come for dinner. Sheâd taken one look at him in this ridiculous getup and decided he was not the man for her.
He could bet sheâd be on the next train headed back home tomorrow.
How had he let Margot talk him into this? He felt absolutely ridiculousâ
Movement at the top of the stairs caught his attention. He stopped and looked up the staircase.
Janet stood to the side, but...
Penelope Price stood at the top of the stairs looking down at him.
Again, not at all what he expected.
Everything churning in his mind came to a dead stop. She took his breath away.
She was beautiful.
Even her hair. It was up. Not fancy, just pretty.
He caught himself staring, his mouth open.
He worked to recover. Had he been rude?
He gave her a smile. She would come down the stairs now, wouldnât she? Or had his staring been so rude sheâd just turn and go back to her room?
She started down the stairs, one step at a time.
He waited until she got two steps away. He held out his hand. âYou look very beautiful.â
She looked down at the last step. A tinge of red rose in her cheeks. She lifted her eyes to meet his and took his hand. âYou look quite handsome yourself, Marshall.â
He felt ridiculous in this getup, but she was looking at his face, not his clothes.
She stepped down to the floor and he looped his right arm around hers, still holding her hand with his left. He led her toward the dining room.
When she saw it, she gasped. There was no one else in the room. Every table was draped with a tablecloth. A candle sat on each table. Green and red adorned the room. A Christmas tree stood by the window, decorated for the season. The room exuded the holiday. It was beautiful.
Only one table in the center of the room had dinner settings and two chairs waiting for them.
He led her to the table and pulled out her chair for her. She sat.
He moved around the table and sat opposite her.
She leaned toward him and whispered. âWeâre the only ones in here.â
He grinned and nodded. âI know.
