After a moment, she changed her mind, she walked to the cabinet and checked the liquors and poured a bumper of brandy. It was in a pretty cut glass decanter with a cut glass knob cap. She carried the glass to the sofa and then switched on the television with the remote and began flipping through the channels. While sipping the brandy, she grew bored and turned off the television. She knew he would be back soon.

He returned a short time later with the one he called Brass. “Tell Brass about the Christmas tree size and height.”

She didn’t think two men could look more different yet they were both handsome. Sterling had silver hair and brown eyes, and Brass had red-brown hair and sky blue eyes. Both wore black, and both were tall with great bodies. Oddly she thought Sterling was the more handsome. Perhaps she was getting a little partial to him.

“Since you’re all tall, a seven-foot tree at least. There are Christmas tree farms around where you can cut down your own.” He seemed the athletic sort and would probably like physical labor. “Do you have a room with a ceiling that’s a foot or higher than the seven-foot tree? There’s a topper for the tree.”

“A topper?” Brass asked, scratching his head.

“Like a hat.” Sterling offered as a suggestion.

“Thrilling,” Brass said dryly, making a silly face.

Sterling shoved his shoulder with his hand. “You can take Slade along,” he said in a warning tone. “You make certain it is not an ugly tree.”

“I can handle one tree, I don’t need Slade.” He turned around and strode to the door. “And there is no such thing as an ugly tree.” Brass turned and walked out the doorway.

“I’m sorry,” she said feeling sad. She rocked the brandy around in the crystal grass.

“What have you got to be sorry about?” he asked, taking the glass from her hand and setting it on the side table.

“I didn’t mean to cause conflict between the two of you.”

“Sweetheart, that wasn’t conflict. That was just Brass being Brass. That guy can always find something to grouch about, especially if it involves working. Come on, we will go into town and look for decorations.”

“I know you can’t be in the spirit of the season so why the sudden interest in shopping for decorations?”

He extended his hand and helped her to her feet. “I know nothing about decorating a tree, but I do know that we have nothing to put on the tree. Therefore, I assume we need some, and we need to shop to buy them. If you are going out, you need someone with you. I am at your service.” He placed his hand on his chest and bowed at the waist. “For now, we will keep you in protective company. Later on, we can see about getting you protected by a spell to make you invisible. The problem with that is you will be invisible to us as well. And another reason is that I get to spend more time with you.
