Turns out, Eddie Izzard might have made a pretty good ninja. The earliest ninja-esque legend, dating back to the 8th century C.E., tells the story of Prince Yamato who snuck into a rival’s dinner party dressed as a young girl. Some serious flirting and a lot of sake later, Yamato caught the ruler off-guard and killed him with a concealed sword. This may be the first and last time a ninja successfully killed anybody.

Hand sickle

Back when ninja-ing was in full swing, it was illegal in Japan for anyone other than a samurai to carry a weapon. Thus, real ninja probably weren’t going around with a Bat-Belt full of ammunition strapped to their waist. Instead, they likely carried a hand sickle, or kama, a small farming tool that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the average village street, but would have provided a practical amount of defense.
