Megan waited while the guys finished the dishes the next morning. Neither one of them would allow her to help despite her insistence that she was perfectly capable of doing it without breaking anything. They were beginning to get on her nerves. She felt as if they thought she wasn’t able to handle everyday life. It was just another shove at her psyche in that direction.

“Ready to head over to the office, honey?” Jeff asked as he dried his hands.

“Definitely. I want to look at those skin samples.”

“We’ve got plenty for you to look at from everyone who has been affected by different things around the planet,” Jeff said.

She watched as Scott dried his hands. He didn’t say anything. In fact, he hadn’t said much of anything all morning. Something was wrong and she couldn’t help but think that it had something to do with her. She would give him the rest of the morning and if he didn’t improve by lunch time she would try and talk to him. There was no way she could live with them if one of them wasn’t happy with the arrangement.

Jeff took her hand and led her through the house and out the back to the courtyard. She could feel Scott’s presence behind them as they entered the office. Jeff led her to where he kept the samples in the main lab and showed her how everything worked.

“I’ll leave you to it while Scott and I open the office for business.” He kissed her lightly on the lips before leaving her alone in the lab.

It wasn’t lost on her that Scott hadn’t even followed them into the lab, much less kissed her good-bye. Unease slipped into her belly that things were already falling apart around her.

Nothing new there, Megan. I never have been able to live up to expectations.

She sighed and swallowed back the tears. She wasn’t going to allow emotions to cripple her in the office. She had work to do. They needed answers for the sake of the children—and their parents. They would be anxious and overwhelmed with worry about their babies. Megan didn’t blame them. One day it would be her wondering about the fate of her children as well. She vowed to have answers before then.

For the next two hours, she poured over the slides, making notes as she did. She would compare her notes with the files once she had completed going over all the specimens. It would be interesting to see what had made each one unique and which were similar in nature after she had studied them individually.

After finishing up with the individual tissue samples, Megan returned everything to the main lab and organized her notes to be ready to go through the files with them. At a knock at the door to her office, she looked up to find Scott leaning on the door frame.

“Hey.” She smiled at him.

“Hey. Sorry to interrupt, but it’s time to eat lunch. You about ready?” he asked.
