USING A CRATE

The crate is a natural house-training aid. Your Dachshund puppy is an inherently clean little fellow and he will try hard not to soil his “den” or living space. Thus, his crate is actually a multipurpose accessory: your Dachshund’s bedroom within your home, a humane house-training tool, a security measure that will protect your household and furniture when you cannot supervise, a travel aid to house and protect your dog when you are traveling (most motels will accept a crated dog), and, finally, a comfy dog space for your Dachshund when your anti-dog relatives come to visit.

Chances are, you purchased a crate that is big enough to house your Dachshund when he is fully grown. Until he gets to his adult size, you must partition the crate, giving your puppy just enough room to stand and turn around. If you don’t, your puppy will sleep on one side of the crate and relieve himself on the other side. As your puppy (and his bodily control) grows, allow him more space in the crate.
