Chapter Nineteen
Brent
âMom?â I whisper-yell as I slowly open the back door to the inn and peek my head inside the next day.
I saw Penelope leaving a little bit ago, all bundled up for her daily walk, so I know the coast is clear.
But still, Iâm not taking any chances.
Yes, Iâm being a child, but Iâm okay with myself.
âMom? Are you in there?â I creep further into the inn and go straight into the kitchen, where I can usually find her.
âBrent? Is that you?â She calls from the exact spot I expect her to be. âHi honey, I was hoping youâd come by today.â
To be honest, since that kiss with Penelope, Iâve been avoiding the inn when sheâs around. Which means Iâve also been neglecting the projects that need to get done for my parents.
Iâve found myself thinking about her nonstop, and when I invited her for a night out, I half-expected her to say no. Now, Iâm not so sure going is a good idea.
âSorry, Iâve been so busy at the office. What do you have on the to-do list for today?â I ask as I put my arms around her. I tower over her, but her hugs are the best thing ever.
They always have been.
âThe bathroom in the Sleepy Orange room needs the toilet fixed and the closet door in the Painted Lady Room isnât closing right. Do you think you could look at those for me while I start tonightâs dinner?â
âYou got it.â I release her shoulders and turn to head outside for the tools, then I pause. âHey, Mom?â
âYes dear?â
âCould you and Dad keep Nora overnight this week? I was thinking of going to the bar with Sally, Dominick, and Penelope on Friday.â
âThat sounds fun, of course we can keep her. We love having that little ball of energy here.â
âThanks, Mom. I have to check with everyone to see if theyâre free. Do you know when Penelope will be back?â
âShe said she was going for her walk and then to the diner for lunch with Sally. So, maybe later this afternoon?â
âPerfect. Iâm going to go get the tools from the shed and then get to work. I took the day off, so I can help with whatever you need.â
âDoes that mean youâll be here for dinner too?â
âYep, Nora and I are going to come over if you have enough food for us.â
âHmm, let me think about it.â She pauses, giving me a teasing smile. âI think we can swing it.â
âWeâll be here then,â I tell her with a chuckle.
As soon as I open the back door, the cold wind whips around my face, and the smell of snow hits my nose. âYou canât be serious, not snow again.â
I head to the shed in the backyard and slowly open the door, taking in the scent of sawdust, cigars, and my dadâs cologne. This is his favorite spot at the inn and where he spends most of his time.
He makes things out of wood, really beautiful pieces. When we moved back to Winterberry, he handcrafted Noraâs headboard, footboard, and bed frame.
