The Body to be Hidden: Shame and Ancient Medicine

Chiara Thumiger

Abstract

The subjective emotion of shame, “a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour”, as well as its objective correspondent, “a loss of respect or esteem; dishonour”, has received more attention than other emotions or psychological experiences in ancient cultural studies, arguably because of its perceived social and political significance, reliance on symbolic and economical manifestations, and intertwinement with ethical ideas; in short, because of its inherent historicity. In this paper, I analyse the restricted sphere of medicine and the subjective experience of patients as they emerge thorough ancient medical texts, with particular attention to “hiding oneself” and “covering one’s body” as phenomenological instances of shame.
