STAGE 6 Adding Tones

With the Cool Grey 30%, 50%, 60% and 70% markers, begin blocking in the tonal values. Do the large round shapes before the flat ones. Round and cylindrical shapes require more mixing of tones than flat shapes do, so working them first allows you to correct overflow. For example, notice the front flat piece of the boiler. My markers have overflowed into this front planar section, but that’s okay. It’ll be corrected when I add tone over this part.

STAGE 7 Finishing Tones

Finish the marker tones. You can see that the overflows from Stage 6 have been covered up and corrected by subsequent markers. It’ll take practice, but eventually you’ll understand which shapes need to be toned first. Usually, you’ll want to work from big areas to small, round shapes to flat, background to foreground.
