A simple machine uses a single applied force to do work on a load. Ignoring friction losses, the work done by the applied force is equal to the work done on the load. However, the machine can amplify the load force (or output force) by trading off force against the distance traveled by the load. The ratio of the output force to the applied force is called the mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage calculation for different simple machines is shown in the following table.
