Chapter Thirteen

My magic remains dormant for the rest of the day and into the night. Even trudging back to my room after dinner alone I feel nothing inside that well. It’s almost like it’s gone, and I’m not going to lie, I’d be fine with that. My magic is the whole reason I’m drawing so much attention for the men of Hell. If I can get rid of it I’ll be nothing more than another random subject. I’d be able to go back to blending into the shadows and maybe make a few friends like Nash and George along the way.

So why does that thought send dread shooting through my chest?

“Ugh, I’m so messed up,” I mutter as I shoulder open the door.

It’s dark inside the dorm, letting me know that Nash hasn’t returned from hanging out with Lucas. Yeah, she isn’t fooling me with all that friend talk. They’re an item, a secret item, but one, nonetheless. I’ll get her to admit it soon enough. I don’t know what they promised each other while whispering, but the tension between them at dinner was sizzling hot. Even Jane had noticed and told them to get a room, much to Nash’s red faced dismay.

I walk further into the dark dorm, kicking off my shoes and stretching my aching limbs. A comfortable full night’s sleep has never sounded so good before. Lucifer may have healed me in the blink of an eye from the outside, but my back is still tender each time I shift from side to side. I have a feeling that Hell magic is really good at the cosmetic side of things but doesn’t dwell too long on the details. Kind of like cutting into a really good looking pot pie only for the inside to be undercooked and crunchy.

“Humans are so mundane.”

I jump at the voice, whirling around to find Lucifer lounging on my twin bed like he owns the place. Well, okay, he does but that’s beside the point. It’s my bed and I don’t remember inviting him into it. Has he been there this entire time listening to my thoughts? By that stupid half smirk on his face, I’d say yes.

“And devils are so predictable,” I retort, crossing my arms over my chest.

He laughs. “I quite enjoy your brittle personality, Aaliyah.”

I nearly shiver at the sound of my name rolling off of his tongue. Lucifer has this accent that I can’t quite place. Almost as if he’s a little bit of every sexy nationality. Italian, Spanish, Greek, British, or even French. It makes me wonder whether or not he can speak all languages and why in the world he’d choose English as his favorite. He’d clearly spool in the women with one well-placed rolling R. Okay, Aali, stop thinking about him that way. He may be the personification of sex on a stick but that doesn’t mean you can objectify him in your head. . . he can hear you doing it!

“And I would quite enjoy my bed without you in it.
