Rain woke up feeling deliciously toasty with Steen snuggled up against her back. Usually when she woke up during the family excursions, she was freezing. It was a pleasant experience being warm for a change. Marriage had its rewards, like having the best sex ever and not being icy in the mornings.

Dad got up and stretched. He limped off out of the ring of animals and beds.

Closing her eyes, Rain burrowed deeper in the covers. She wasn’t moving unless she had to.

Someone nudged her.

“Nooo. I want to sleep,” she complained.

“You need to leave, right now.” It was her Dad’s voice and it was filled with urgency.

She was instantly awake and lifted her head. “Dad, what’s wrong?”

“There are footprints all around the camp. Made by the kind of riding boots only someone from a clan wears. Someone was here.” He straightened to scan the area. “They might be still here. We got to go. Get yourself and your husband up. Saddle your sherakey and ride.”

“What about you and Mom?”

“I don’t think they want us, sweetheart.”

That shook her to the core. Why was Callie still determined to chase after her and her new husband? She was married and didn’t want an old man.

She shook Steen. “Wake up. We got to go. Right now.”

“Huh?” Steen opened his eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“We got to get out of here. Dad thinks Callie’s warriors were here sneaking around the camp and checking us out.”

Once Steen was up, he shook out then rolled up the blankets.

Rain adjusted her clothing and started to saddle Thunder.

“Take my sherakey. Steen can ride him,” Mom said, pressing a lacquered box into her hands.

“Who will you ride, Mom?” She packed the box in a saddle bag. It probably had sandwiches in it.

“I’ll drive the team.” Mom fastened her new riding cloak around her. “I’m used to these snags anyway. I think Steen can handle my little steed.”

“Okay, Mom.” She hugged her mother and started to saddle her mom’s mount. Thank goodness they had switched to the light weight tack, she could get hers and her mother’s mount ready.

Steen helped, but he wasn’t used to handling sherakey gear. As soon as they had the animals equipped, they mounted up.

River filled two canteens and brought them over. “Ride like the wind, little sister.”

“Mom? Dad?” She wasn’t sure what she was going to say. Rain had left her family only once when she became Momma Roosa’s apprentice and just lived down the road from them. Would she ever see her family again?

“Ride, daughter. Ride fast and far.” Dad pulled Mom against his side. They will look after each other, but… She glanced at her brother and Winona. They’ll be all right. They have to be.

She clicked her tongue, and Thunder moved into a canter. First thing in the morning, he had energy and need to be run full out. He was ready to go. Her mom’s little mount was right behind hers with Steen clinging to the saddle.

Kicking her mount to run faster, Thunder started to move into a ground-eating gallop.
