Solving an equation is a bit like playing a game, eliminating things from the seesaw or equation until you have the unknown by itself on one side and a number on the other. We use inverse operations to do the eliminating. Here’s an example with subtraction and division in it:

The game gets slightly harder if you put the unknown on both sides. But only slightly:

It’s always worth remembering that we can check the solutions to equations by putting the number we found back into the original equation. This is called substitution:

5 × −1 + 7

=

3 + −1
