I know by now that you had tried to e-mail me a few times by now probably, but I’ve been in the SHU (Segregated Housing Unit) (the hole)a since April 16: I’ve been writing administrative grievances against the administration since I’ve been [at this prison]. I don’t know if that’s the reason why or if it’s something else, but the administration has fabricated an incident against me and put me here.

a. This is a colloquial expression for solitary confinement. For several months before this, Chris and I had been using the prison’s limited e-mail system to communicate, and when I didn’t hear from him for many weeks, I began to get worried. Once he got in touch via this letter, we resumed corresponding by regular mail. Chris spent five months in solitary confinement, mostly cut off from other inmates. In August 2018 he went on a twenty-six-day hunger strike to protest his treatment. The prison where this occurred was not Pine Knot or the facility where he is currently detained.
