THE CUTTING TRICK
The simplicity of this trick tends to fool the audience, who expects a difficult challenge. Suppose you have a wooden cube whose edges are 3 inches in length. The challenge you present to your audience is to determine the least number of cuts needed with a saw to separate this cube into 9 cubes of edge 1 inch. You could suggest to the audience that they pile the cubes, as they cut them, in any way they choose. The trick here is that no matter how they are piled, six cuts will be necessary to partition the original cube into nine smaller cubes. Your audience will be surprised by how simple this is and by the fact that the center cube would require a cut on each of its six sides, therefore needing at least six saw cuts.
