That night, I couldn’t get to sleep. I found myself restless, lying in bed, unable to welcome the blackness that was unconsciousness. The day’s events had been unlike anything I’d ever pictured for myself, and yet I would never change them. I liked being here, with Rhett and Chance, and I never wanted to leave them. Not ever.

Maybe I couldn’t get a wink of sleep because I was still sleeping in my own bed, away from them. Maybe I needed their familiar warmth now, now that I’d accepted the way my body and heart felt about them. I supposed I could’ve gotten up and went to their room, asked to squeeze onto Rhett’s bed and join them, but I didn’t feel quite there, yet.

Maybe I was just being stupid. I didn’t know. But after laying there for hours in the dark, I found myself too restless to lay there any longer, so I quietly got up and headed downstairs. There wasn’t much to do at night, not without candlelight, and sitting on the couch by myself was quite boring.

You know what I missed about the city? Beyond the food and the air conditioning and the modern conveniences, I mean.

Television. The mindless TV shows that could entertain you for hours. I missed watching them with my sister, talking during the commercials about what we thought would happen next, especially in the teenage drama ones. Those… oh, those always liked to throw you red herrings. Those were a guilty pleasure, definitely.

I got off the couch, moving to the window near the front door. I peeked outside, just to make sure no one was around. You never knew around here. My bare feet took me to the door, and I unlatched it, stepping outside. I moved away from the house, hugging my arms to my chest, gazing up at the starry night sky. Without streetlights, you could see so much more of the sky.

Norah. I hoped my sister was doing okay. I hoped my father wasn’t taking it out on her, my running away. I didn’t think he would, but he was clearly not the most stable guy around. My gut instinct told me she’d be safer because she was an omega and would be worth more to match once she turned eighteen, but was that truly the case?

I told her I would go back to her, and I meant it. I just… I didn’t know when, or how. Would Rhett want to come with me, or would he tell me it was too dangerous? Would he try to forbid me from going? I certainly wouldn’t take kindly to that—

I heard a noise, and I whirled around, staring at the front door to the house. A quick glance around told me no one was nearby, obviously, since it was well past midnight, the moon high in the sky, its silver light raining down on the earth.
