Chapter Twelve

Headmistress sent me into her office alone—or she tried to. Benji and Walden followed me inside. Daddy dearest sat behind the big desk in Headmistress’ chair, and his expression went from annoyed disdain to anger in the flash of an eye. “Anjelica, I sent only for you.” He stopped then as if waiting to be obeyed, which of course he was. But when I only stood in front of the desk, flanked by my mates, neither of whom showed any interest in leaving, he cleared his throat. “If you gentlemen have any business with me, I can see you privately after this matter is settled.”

“Settled, Daddy?” I flexed my left hand, taking strength from the band on my third finger. “What do you mean?”

“Anjelica, I’ve come to escort you home, to prepare for your mating.” He closed a folder in front of him. “It’s all arranged so say goodbye to your friends and pack your things.”

“No,” I said. “Not happening, Daddy.”

“Anjelica, don’t be impertinent. Go along now. Your bags will be shipped so we can fly and not waste any time.” He favored me with a small smile. “I’m very glad your dragon has emerged in time for the mating flight. It would be quite embarrassing to have to marry you in a grounded ceremony.”

“Yeah, about that.” I fought down annoyance he put his embarrassment ahead of my happiness. Indeed ahead of my being alive. “I’m already mated. I’d show you the markings, but they are, as I’m sure you know, in a rather intimate area. So instead I’ll have to show you this.” I thrust my hand forward, the ring sparkling in the lamplight. “Mating rings, Daddy. I made my own decision. So you can call off whatever festivities you and Stepmama have planned.”

As I spoke, the blood had drained from his face, but when it came rushing back he looked like a cherry tomato about to pop. “And you, Daughter, can throw away that piece of junk jewelry before we leave. I arranged a good mating for you, one better than you deserve. Your betrotheds are of good family and after all the fuss you’ve raised, it’s a miracle they haven’t demanded the contract be voided.” He’d risen to his feet during his rave, and now stood nearly on tiptoe, fingers braced on the gleaming wood desk. I had a vague thought that Headmistress might have to have her desk refinished after this.

“I’m afraid you don’t understand, Father.” I retreated to the formal address I’d used for many years. “I am mated. It’s a done deal. You’ll have to live with it.” And no doubt be even more embarrassed than if he’d had to marry me off on the ground.

“Don’t be impertinent,” he snapped. “You had no right to take these steps, and therefore any actions were illegal and have no standing.” As if he’d just recognized the men standing on either side of him, he addressed his next remarks to them. “I suppose you put her up to this, trying to get your hands on my fortune.
