It's pitch dark when I open my eyes, and a quick glance at the clock tells me why.

03:22.

So early…

Dre is fast asleep beside me with one arm over his face, and I notice the change in his scent again. The boys took great pride in teasing him over it, but he told me they would because of how they did Dee and Rome.

Unable to fall back asleep, I decide to get up to hunt instead, and after I leave a note for Dre in case he wakes up, I venture out to the backyard.

It's raining, but only slightly—it’s more of a mist, and the moon, although only in its first quarter, is giving off a dazzling glow over the distance.

Stunning.

Taking a deep inhale, I admire the magnificent view over the fields before the forest begins. Dre’s house is secluded by miles of sustainable farmland and isn't close to any towns or services of any kind.

It’s literally in the middle of nowhere.

I run through the fields naked before shifting and lowering to all fours as I get amongst the trees. It's strange not having Dre on my back how he has been almost every time I've hunted out here, but it's also freeing not having to worry about him getting hurt during a hunt either.

It doesn’t take long to pick out a deer or take it down, and as I drag it back to the house, I wish I felt a little less on edge than I currently do. One moment I’m excited because it’s Dre’s birthday tomorrow and Ariella will be telling us our roles, but on the other, I’m scared of what our roles will actually be.

And in addition to that, I’m absolutely terrified of having to witness Dre’s shift.

‘Everything will be just fine, Beau.’

I drop my kill and spin around when I hear the same woman’s voice I heard when I went hunting with my sister at the James’ hold for the first time.

“Who said that?”

No one replies, nor does anyone appear.

“Why keep speaking to me and not showing your face?”

A sudden wind sweeps through the trees, rushing towards me and causing my hair to whip around my face. But as quick as it comes, it settles, and I'm left to an eerie silence all around.

Not a sound can be heard, and it’s deafening.

It's undoubtedly creepy, even though I can see clear as day in the dark, but instead of being scared, I'm left with an inner peace instead.

Even my anxiety over Dre’s change has lessened.

I pick up my kill to continue towards the house, not knowing why, but smiling to myself.

“Whoever you are, thank you. I needed that.”

‘I know.’

I don’t stop in my tracks when I hear her voice this time, though, I smile harder as I continue my walk in the rain.
