Chapter 6

Jules managed to avoid being alone with Tarrik for the rest of the day. It helped that he had his shift on the bridge, so all she had to do was stay off there. She ended up exploring the ship with Verrik, who was happy to have someone else willing to crawl through the tunnels with him. Lessys and Sasslys were the only other two who could have – even with their wings tucked in tightly, the other Hadesians wouldn’t fit – and apparently they preferred not to unless they had to.

She, on the other hand, liked to know everything about where she was currently residing. There was only one section she wasn’t allowed to go in – the room where the weapons were held, because Verrik said that their Weapons Specialist would have a fit. The room wasn’t even hooked up to the main computer system; it was on its own internalized system for security. He showed her everywhere else though and also made sure she knew how to suit up and to use the escape pods in case of emergency.

All in all it was an enjoyable rest of the day until dinner when she realized that everyone was now comfortable enough to start asking her questions. They wanted to know about earth, her family, and herself, and she was really only comfortable talking about the first option.

On the other hand, she felt rude not answering personal questions that were pretty normal for social interaction. Especially when they were being asked in such a goodnatured way.

"So are you going to take Tarrik back to visit Earth and meet the family?" Sasslys asked teasingly. It was a completely normal question, but Jules tensed anyway.

“No,” she said tersely. Then immediately regretted it when everyone recoiled slightly and she realized the answer had come out a lot harsher than she’d intended it to. She knew Sasslys hadn’t meant anything by it. Staring down at her plate, she poked at the pseudo-lasagna the replicator had created for her dinner. “My dad left when I was five and my mom kicked me out as soon as I was legally an adult. If I have any other family I never met them.”

Silence. Yeah. That was about the reaction she expected.

What she didn’t expect what came next. Sasslys scooted closer to her, wrapping her arm around Jules’ shoulders. “Don’t worry about it, they’re assholes and they didn’t deserve you anyway.”

Jules shrugged. “I was pretty obnoxious.”

“Please,” Verrik said with a snort. “No one is as obnoxious as Shonik and we still put up with him.”

Despite herself, Jules felt a little smile curve her lips. She’d met Shonik while Verrik was taking her around on a tour of the ship; he was Tarrik’s Second Mate and Operations Officer and he was a little… prissy? Anal retentive? Rigid? All of those descriptions fit. He was also currently sitting at the table with them since it was third watch and Korik, the third mate, was the one currently running the bridge.
