Chapter Nine
Rachel was seated at her desk when a gentleman knocked on the door to her study. He cleared his throat, and she glanced up. He looked to be in his thirties, rather good-looking, she had to admit. But who was he, and why was he here? Had Cedric arranged a meeting on behalf of one of their pupils?
âIâm sorry, are you looking for Mr. Gregor?â She set her letter aside, and he remained at the doorway.
âForgive me, but no. Mr. Gregor told me I should come and introduce myself. He arranged an appointment and told me to come to the study.â With an embarrassed smile, he added, âOr if I made a mistake, I could leave.â
âNo, itâs all right.â She hadnât been expecting a guest. Was he here to seek a wife? Or had he come for another reason? Rachel offered him a seat, noticing that he did have kind, green eyes.
âWhat can I do for you?â she inquired, taking out a sheet of parchment and a quill. âI presume you have spoken with Cedric about seeking a wife?â He was slightly older than she was expecting, but not so old that he couldnât be a possibility for either Miss Edwards or Lady Ashleigh. That is, if their current prospects did not end up as sheâd hoped.
âAh, yes,â he admitted, a slight flush coming over his cheeks. âAlthough I know this is not the usual way of doing things. Mr. Gregor did say he thought you might be able to help.â
Rachel relaxed and began taking notes. âLet us begin by your telling me your name?â
He broke out with a startled laugh. âForgive me. I should have begun with that. I am Sir Brian Lucas.â
âA knight, then?â
âA baronet,â he corrected.
She wrote down his name, and said, âTell me, what are you looking for in a wife, Sir Brian?â
He cleared his throat and admitted, âIâm not actually certain. I know that Iâm not the most exciting of gentlemen. I like to read, ride horses, and I am not especially fond of ballrooms. Though, if my wife wanted to go, I would certainly attend.â
She wrote down that he would want someone quiet. âWhat do you hope we can do for you?â she asked. âAre you trying to improve yourself, or are you content and simply want our help with matchmaking?â
He paused a moment and seemed to think it over. âIf I were only interested in a young debutante, it would be simple enough to attend a few balls. I am seven-and-thirty, and I do not think an eighteen-year-old miss would suit me at all. I am looking for a woman who is more mature.â
A sudden rush of fear washed over her with uncertain nerves. Cedric wouldnât do this to her, would he? She had fully embraced the prospect of being a spinster for the rest of her life. She didnât want to open the Pandoraâs box of forgotten hopes.
Rachel dipped her pen in the ink and wrote the word Mature on the parchment.
