Chapter 20

Logan’s mouth went dry at hearing the maid’s frantic words. Without waiting to hear Douglas Reed’s response, he ran from the room taking the steps upward three at a time. He could hear footsteps following behind him and assumed that it was the physician. They entered the Dowager Marchioness’ bedchamber one after the other, Mr. Reed immediately moving to the bed to assess the situation. Logan had to admit that he was a good man to have around in a crisis.

“Mother?” he spoke to her in soothing tones, hiding his own fear at the ashen pallor of her skin. She tried to mouth his name but could not form the word. “Mr. Reed is here to help you,” he reassured her, however, seeing the lethargic glaze over her eyes did not reassure him in the slightest. He could see why the maid had panicked so. His mother truly looked as if she were on death’s doorstep.

“Can you hear me, My Lady?” Mr. Reed inquired, all business and compassion. When he received no response, he took the candle from the bedside table and moved it across her eyes. He must have seen something that he did not like because his frown deepened. He continued to examine her in silence. When he was finished, he beckoned Logan to follow him outside into the hallway.

“What is it, Mr. Reed?”

The physician shook his head. “I cannot be certain, but it appears that there is more extensive damage than first appeared. I am sorry, but there is nothing more I can do for her except to make her as comfortable as possible and pray that it is not fatal.”

Logan felt the blood drain from his face as he clenched his hands in fear and grief. He knew that there was very little that could be done if the brain had been affected. Too many people were lost to head injuries while medical professionals were left to do aught about it. “If there is anything at all that can be done for her, I beg you to do it.”

“My Lord, you should prepare yourself for the worst.”

Logan’s knees wavered and he moved to take a seat in the chair beside the door. “I will need to tell Sarah.”

“I can do so if it would be of help to you.”

Logan nodded his head. “Perhaps that would be best given you know more about such things than I and could explain it better.”

The physician nodded his head in agreement. “I will inform the butler that I wish to speak with her if you would stay with your mother.”

Logan nodded again. “Will you be staying with us?”

“I will. I will not leave her side until we know for certain whether she will live or…” the unspoken words hung between them like a heavy weight.

“Thank you, Mr. Reed.”

“Perhaps given the circumstances it would be best if we dispensed with the formalities, My Lord.”

“Yes, thank you, Reed. I appreciate your assistance and candor.” Logan did not extend the same offer
