Raphael watched the Darlingtons’ carriage pull away, behind the barouche, before turning to Hunt. “Why did you not let me tell her?”

“Tell her what?” Angelina asked, pausing in the act of getting into the carriage.

“About the place we call home,” Hunt said wryly.

“Ah,” Angelina replied, understanding filling her eyes. “Rafe, it would be too overwhelming for her, considering what happened.”

Raphael scowled up into the now cloudy sky, revelling in the first drops of rain that stung his cheeks. “I know, but perhaps a bit of advance warning would have been kinder.”

“If you had told her, she would have wavered. This way is the best way. She needs to get to know you again, without all these distractions.” Hunt gestured at the members of the promenading Society now hurrying for their own carriages to avoid the sudden downpour. “That is really why I suggested the house party, not some silly wager with Worthing.”

“Thank goodness you decided not to extend an invite to that Murrow chit, she is not known for her discretion,” Angelina said with a satisfied nod. She settled herself into the carriage, and as soon as Hunt and Raphael were seated, and Hunt tapped the roof, the carriage set off.

“Indeed,” Hunt said. “I am not averse to forward young ladies, but that one is too much.”

“Really, Hunt.” Angelina swatted him in exasperation with her parasol, while Raphael turned to stare out of the window caught up in his own thoughts about whether Elodie coming to stay was the best idea.
