Cemetery Voices

Did members of St. John’s Episcopal Church near Beltsville hear voices, or were the muted sounds nothing more than creaking timbers in the historic house of worship? In a 2007 story in The Gazette, reporter Dennis Carter spotlighted a number of unexplained reports recorded in the journal of the wife of a rector of the 150-year-old church.

A report compiled in 1976 detailed a number of strange incidents experienced by the woman at St. John’s, which included sightings of fleeting shadows dashing across the church graveyard at dusk and hearing voices. One incident involved the pastor’s wife, who claimed she heard a series of sounds that seemed to indicate an unscheduled meeting was taking place inside the church. When she entered the building to investigate, there was no one inside, but she reported she had “the strangest feeling that each and every pew was fully occupied.”

One of the woman’s daughters told her parents she had seen a man standing alone in a section of the church cemetery, but as she approached the stranger, who was dressed in a gray uniform, he disappeared. When the family members arrived at the exact spot where the young girl said the man had been standing, they discovered a gravestone of a Confederate soldier who had died in the Battle of Chancellorsville.
