Chapter Sixteen

Friday morning Millie got up, refreshed and ready to go out and see Henry again. Just as friends. That’s all they were. Friends. But she did so appreciate his company. And she was looking forward to planting flowers and making his yard look nice. He had worked so hard painting the house. And even if he might not be living in Paradise Springs come the fall, the flowers should help the property sell. Well, that was what the English said. She had heard it time and again at the inn.

Not all the farms in the area kept their yards up. Some of the older residents didn’t have the energy to perform such tasks, and their children were too busy. There weren’t many geriatric citizens in Paradise Valley who lived alone, but there were a few. Perhaps she should go around to see if she could help spruce up their yards and make the community look a little nicer. Not that it didn’t look nice. Paradise Springs was one of the prettiest places Millie had ever lived. Or perhaps she should ask the widows club to help with such a chore. It sure beat sitting around all evening talking about the neighbors and whoopie pie recipes, and the neighbors’ whoopie pie recipes. More productive anyway.

She sighed as she pulled Daisy out onto the street and headed for the other side of town. She had a feeling that was the point of the meetings. Not necessarily to help the community, but to give the ladies an outlet and an excuse to eat too many desserts. Nothing wrong with that either, she supposed. She wasn’t one to judge.

The trip out to the King farm was as nice as it always was. The thought of seeing Henry again made her smile as she drove along. Now she was just being silly.

But when she got to the house, her smile froze on her face, silly or not. All the flowers that had been sitting around in the yard had been planted. Pretty much in all the places she had imagined they would go. Someone had come out and planted the flowers though she had promised to do so. Did Henry not want her planting? She thought they were past that.

She pulled Daisy to a stop in front of the house and hopped down just as Henry came out onto the porch.

“Hello, Millie.”

“What happened?” she demanded. Her tone was a little too sharp, but she had been looking forward to this and now it was . . . already done.

He looked confused for a moment, then nodded. “Oh, the flowers. Well, I was afraid that everyone would know I had bought them in Paradise Hill, so I planted them and got rid of the evidence.”

“The evidence?” The evidence was right there in the ground, taking root as they spoke.

“The pots they came in. Those bright pink logos could be seen from the road, and Malinda Beachy seems to drive by every day—sometimes twice—so I didn’t think it worth the risk.
