Chapter Ten

Last month, if someone had told Addison she’d be sitting across from Colette at the next pitch meeting with her chest heaving, dressed in a ball gown, she never would’ve believed it. Not in a million years. Not even a trillion, or a zillion, or whatever it was that came after a million.

Even worse, she’d been late. Tardiness was the worst possible faux pas at Veil, akin to showing up at a wedding right smack in the middle of the part where the minister asks if anyone objects to the union of the bride and groom.

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Addison wished she could speak. She certainly had plenty to say, starting with the fact that she hadn’t had a moment’s peace since Carter Payne took up residence in her office...her life...her every waking thought. She no longer had a shred of peace to hold on to, thank you very much.

But Colette was Carter’s aunt and his surrogate mother. Of course Addison couldn’t say those things. So instead she folded her hands in her lap and tried her best to catch her breath while Colette regarded the two of them with cool irritation.

“How nice of you two to join me—” Colette glanced at her silver Cartier tank watch, a gift from the famous jewelry store’s public relations department “—five full minutes after our meeting was scheduled to begin.”

More like three minutes, after Addison and Carter’s mad dash from the fashion closet. But Addison wasn’t about to correct her, and neither was Carter, apparently. He sat quietly in the chair beside her with a perfectly inscrutable expression on his chiseled face. Cool, calm and collected, as always.

Meanwhile, Addison could feel a splotchy, red rash blossoming on her chest, her lips were bee-stung, and her legs felt like noodles. She longed for a paper bag to breathe into. Colette was talking, but the words seemed to go in one of Addison’s ears and straight out the other.

She’d kissed Carter. And oh, what a kiss it had been.

“Excuse me.” Colette’s assistant strode into the office, doing a double take as she took in Addison’s attire. She blinked and refocused on their boss. “Colette, I’ve got the rep from Oscar de la Renta on the phone for you. I know you’re in a meeting right now, but he’s about to board a transatlantic flight to London and I thought you might want to speak to him before he takes off.”

“Yes. Thank you.” Colette nodded and aimed another frown at Addison and Carter. “This is an important call. If I go take it in the conference room, can I trust that you two will be here when I return? No more disappearing on me?”

“Absolutely.” Addison nodded, although she longed to dart back to the closet to get her laptop. In the rush to get to the meeting, she’d left it behind.

“Take your time.” Carter drummed his fingers on the tablet in his lap, because he’d managed to remember his tech.
