Chapter 17
The Murders
âSorry for being so harsh tonight after what Grandma Lu did, Eve, but we never had any shit like that happen at the gala before,â he said, as we laid in bed hours later. âShe disrespected the event and she knows it. She knows it was our night for the Royce men and the league members. Sheâs never done anything like that in the over 50-plus years sheâs been attending it.â
âMaybe sheâs tired of Mayson disrespecting her, Dray. Iâm not trying to start a fight here, okay? But theyâve been married for over 70 years and in those years sheâs put up with a lot of his shit. She was obviously not in the mood tonight when she saw Rebecca. What was she doing there, anyway?â
âGramps invited her,â he replied.
âAnd see, thatâs what Iâm talking about, Dray. He knew by inviting her that it was gonna possibly cause a fight and it did. Is he in love with her?â
âHell naw, Eve. He only loves my grandma. Always has and always will,â he replied, as he passively looked at the TV.
âThen if he loves her so much then why does he feel the need to have Rebecca around? It makes no sense. But you have to admit that you werenât expecting for your grandma to throw that beautiful vase at her. It looked heavy as hell!â
He grinned. âIt was. But her and gramps have been doing yoga with weights ever since theyâve been married, way before it became the kind of exercises that people now do, so sheâs way stronger than she looks. But that vase was one of our oldest vases that gramps and Grandma Lu had brought back on one of their many trips to Africa. It was well over 50 years old, I believe, but she didnât care.â
âShe was mad, Dray, you have to understand that.â
âOh, I understand, Eve, I understand. My dad even said later that heâs surprised that she hasnât done anything like this sooner. He told me that she told him that he acts just like gramps, and that I act just like him. Sheâs right. Itâs a Royce menâs curse without a doubt. We just canât seem to stay away from women.â
âBut you all need to try, Dray. Weâre the ones that you all married, not any of these other women out here. How are we supposed to feel that you all love us like the way you say you do and tell everyone that you do when itâs clear that your actions tell us and everyone else something entirely different? I donât wanna be in my 80s almost damn near 90, Dray, and throwing vases at a woman who is damn near 50 years younger than me because youâre clearly fucking her.â
He grinned. âDonât worry, baby. Like I said, we do have a problem, and we all acknowledge that we do. Itâs like a disease. Itâs clear that Grandma Lu wasnât having it tonight, but this isnât the only thing itâs been said that she did.
