Chapter 12
I got out of the car and went in to get Spencer. He was glad to see me. He came running up to me all smiles and happy. I had told Spencer that dad and I were going to see a special doctor that helps people who have problems dealing with each other. He wanted to know if the doctor was going to "fix" his dad? I told him that I didn't know; but that he would try to help. Spencer was happy with that. He wanted to know if I went to the doctor too? I said "yes" and that his dad was there too. Spencer looked somber and wanted to know if dad had apologized for hurting me and Thomas? I told him that that didn't matter right now; and that dad was coming home this afternoon after work. Spencer wanted to know if he was going to taekwondo practice with us? I said I don't know; but, we'll send him a text message and see. I totally forgot about taekwondo. I sent Randall a message to see if he was going. He sent back one that said he'd meet us there. Spencer didn't want his dad around right now, and you could see it on his face. I tried to reassure him that everything was going to be okay; but, I don't think I got far.
Do I even know where Randall had been the last week? "No", and quite frankly, I wasn't eager to find out either. I was seriously torn. I wanted my husband. I wanted the man I married. I wanted to be happy and have a great life with the man I fell in love with. I wanted us to have a whole family. I didn't want the abuse. I didn't want the lies. I didn't wasn't to not be able to trust my husband. The emotional conflict I felt was tremendous and it weighed on me. I could still feel the pressure on my chest; but, the tears had stopped running before I had gone in to pick up Spencer. We got home and while Spencer changed clothes, I got him a snack. Thomas stayed hidden under the dining room table and Gladys was in Spencers' closet napping. Thomas seemed to be feeling okay; but, you could tell that some of the life had gone out of him, just like me. I think he was worried too. Spencer ate his snack and off we went to taekwondo. We had been there about 15 minutes and Randall walked in. He sat next to me and started to make small talk about how Spencer was doing in school. Spencer saw his dad there and quickly turned away. I don't know if he turned out of fear of Randall or if he turned because he didn't like having his father there.
It had gotten difficult for Spencer. We could be sitting at taekwondo, having a meal at the table, or Spencer could be playing with his friends at school and Randall would call him "Michael".
