The following day on Talia’s lunch break, she strolled along the beach with Carrie, eating paper-wrapped burgers and drinking lemonade. They took the sidewalk that led to a string of quaint little stores, where they window-shopped along the way.

“You must love living here,” Talia said.

“I do. I have a good life with Thunder. The sand, the surf, the house where we’ll raise our child.” Carrie glanced back in the direction of her home. “What more could I want?”

“You and Thunder have come a long way.”

“Yes, we have.” Carrie stopped walking. Her reddish-brown hair blew across her cheek, and she batted the errant strands away from her face. “Something is going on with you and Aaron, isn’t it?”

“He asked me to marry him.”

“Oh, my God.”

“Don’t get too excited. There’s a catch.” Talia explained the situation, and the other woman merely gaped at her.

“People aren’t supposed to get married for revenge.”

“Aaron and I aren’t most people.”

“So you’re going to do it?”

“I don’t know.” Talia frowned at the sea, at the water foaming along the shore. The food had gone heavy in her stomach. “I’m fighting my feelings for him.”

“You’re worried about falling in love?” Carrie softened her tone. “I’ll bet he’s fighting his feelings, too.”

“Because he’s willing to disappoint his family to marry me? He’s only doing that because he thinks he can change me.”

“Maybe you’ll change each other.”

“And maybe we’ll drive each other over the edge.”

“I think you already are.” Carrie smiled a little. “But Thunder and I did that, too.” She stopped smiling. “Still, we never pegged you and Aaron for getting back together. In fact, we’ve been concerned about asking you to be the maid of honor and best man at our wedding.”

“I know.” Talia tossed her empty wrapper in a nearby trash can. “But honestly, we’d like to stand up for you.”

Carrie sipped her lemonade. “Who knows? You might get married before Thunder and I do.”

“Wouldn’t that be ironic?” The sea rose in an angry wave, and she hoped it wasn’t an omen. “Do you really think Aaron is fighting his feelings?”

Carrie nodded. “He’s asking you to make a lifelong commitment. To be with him. That adds up to love, whether he knows it or not.”

At this stage of the game, Talia couldn’t tell; she couldn’t gauge Aaron’s emotions.

Silent, they kept walking, passing gift shops and surf apparel stores. A light breeze blew, but the water was still rioting, making havoc of the sand.

“You should see the ring he gave me,” Talia said.

“Where is it?”

“At home, in my jewelry box. Six years ago I would have melted at his feet for a rock like that.”

“Six years ago he married Jeannie.”

“Exactly.” Talia wondered what Aaron’s ex-wife would think of his unconventional proposal. “I don’t even know if he’s told his family yet.”

“He’ll have to if you agree to marry him.”

“Yes, he will.” She watched the turbulent waves, knowing she was on the verge of saying yes and hoping that Carrie was right.

Because if Talia fell in love, she couldn’t bear for it to be one-sided.
