Elizabeth stood next to Mr. Darcy as the carriage pulled up the drive. There was a slight snowfall which could only add to the charm of Pemberley's grounds. Still, Elizabeth was eager to receive her new sister-in-law and return to the drawing room and its warm fire.
Her husband bested the footman as the carriage pulled to a stop, opening the door himself and reaching in to offer his assistance. A fine young lady, about the age Catherine would have been, stepped out of the carriage with a cheerful disposition. It was no wonder why Miss Caroline Bingley adored Miss Darcy so well. Her sister-in-law was nearly the opposite of her brother, where he was dark she was fair. It seemed, much to Elizabeth's amusement, that Darcy could relax enough to offer a smile to his sister. She felt herself smiling in response, for Georgiana's expression was contagious.
"You must be my new sister," Georgiana cried and dragged her brother unseemly up the short stairwell. He cleared his throat and introduced Elizabeth, who bent slightly at the knees. But Georgiana embraced her warmly, which Elizabeth was glad to return. "I have always wanted a sister. We shall be the best of friends, I'm sure of it."
"That will be quite splendid," Elizabeth said, warmth in her voice. "Come, I've tea ready in the drawing room. Let us retreat from the cold."
"Yes," the youngest Darcy agreed and looped her arm through Elizabeth's, leaving Darcy to follow in their wake. "You must tell me all about my brother's proposal and your wedding. I was quite displeased at learning of it after the fact."
Elizabeth tried not to grin at the reproving stare the woman sent at her brother.
"It was quite a simple affair, I assure you," Elizabeth said. "I was enjoying an afternoon walk near my family's estate when he came upon me, with his intentions to propose. I did not believe he much liked me, I'll admit, so I was taken by much surprise."
"That does not surprise me at all," Georgiana said. "One can rarely tell if my brother enjoys something. I believe he must think it his duty to be somber at all times."
"It does suit him quite well," Elizabeth pointed out, which caused Georgiana to laugh.
"Yes, I believe we will become quite close," the younger woman declared. Elizabeth looked over her shoulder at her husband, a hesitant expression on her face.
