Chapter Twenty Seven

I startle awake, my heart hammering in my chest. Swinging my legs off the bed, I drag in a ragged breath. The room is dark and quiet, almost too quiet. I peer over my shoulder at Lukas—still sound asleep, stretched out on his stomach with his arms under the pillow, the position putting his well-defined back on display. I sit, trying to place where the feeling of unease is coming from. If anything were amiss, Lukas would be the first to know.

Standing, I pad over to the window and peer out into the darkness. My nerves are on edge, my body tense. My eyes scan the area for the two shifters on watch tonight. Jameson, a mountain lion, and Trevor, a wolf. There’s no sign of either of them though. Searching down the pack bond, all seems normal. But then what woke me up?

A noise comes from outside the room—the top step of the stairs, to be precise. The floor there always squeaks. My whole body tenses with the sound, but I force my breathing to slow so I can listen. Astraea’s piercing scream echoes through the house and I snap into action, running for the door. Flinging it open, I slam into a hard body and sway backward.

“Shit!” I exclaim as I land painfully on my ass.

My heart pounds against my ribcage as I look up into a set of emotionless, icy blue eyes that make me shudder. The man’s pale skin has a slight shimmer to it, and his pointed ears peek out through long snowy hair that falls past his shoulders. He cocks his head in a predatory manner, sending my already wild heartbeat skittering. This is no man. This is a high fae.

“You are not supposed to be awake,” he says in a musical lilt, an air of arrogance surrounding him.

“Bit casual for a break and enter,” I snap, gesturing to his attire. The jeans and white shirt nearly make him appear human, but the ears and skin are a dead giveaway. Well, for me they are. To someone without magic sight, he probably blends in fairly well. The cold, emotionless look in his eyes doesn’t help either.

Where is everyone?

The fae smirks as if reading my thoughts and looks over my head into the room where Lukas lies sleeping. I quickly get to my feet, wishing I had my dagger, but I do at least have my magic. I reach for it, but nothing happens.

My eyes widen as I snarl, “What did you do?”

Suddenly very aware of the absence of the icy sense of danger I usually have, my panic rises quickly. Dammit, I do not want to be without my magic. Desperation twists my insides as a sense of urgency takes over. I need to get to Astra. I’ve never heard her scream before, the sound automatically sends fear racing through me. She must have seen the fae coming. My palms start sweating as I try drawing on my courage. Whatever this fae has done, it has taken out everyone in the vicinity and my magic.
