Sequoia and Kings Canyon ecosystem map

Tom Patterson (retired) and Jim Eynard, NPS Harpers Ferry Center for Media Services

This 3D oblique map depicts the varied ecosystem environments within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and was created for a new park brochure in 2018. The Sierra Nevada ecosystems include alpine, subalpine, coniferous forests, and the canyon and foothills ecosystem. The ecosystems are defined by elevation and the map uses hypsometric tints and natural colors to define these regions, showing snowy, white areas in the alpine ecosystem and a deep green in the forested areas. The elevation range of the map is nearly 13,000 feet ranging from over 14,000 feet on Mount Whitney down to 1,000 feet in the canyons and foothills. This ecosystem map of Sequoia and Kings National Parks supplements a more detailed inset map found on the other side of the park’s brochure.
