Lark: Chapter 11

I was fuming still a day later after Maniac’s big decision to exclude me from his talk with Jonas and his plans on what to do about the Dragons and Cobras’ threats to me. Despite my multiple attempts to get him to tell me what they discussed, he refused to tell me. He took me back to my place and settled in for the night. I wanted to kick his ass out of my house, but I knew he wouldn’t go. So, instead, I shut myself in my room and ignored him as best as I could.

Was it childish? Yeah, but he was making me so mad, I didn’t know what to do. I had to gain back some kind of calm, so I could work on my own plans. If he thought he was going to dictate to me about my own life, he was sadly mistaken. Our agreement to try dating and see where it went was off the table.

I placed a few calls before leaving my room this morning to go to Fortress. As expected, he wanted me to rest and stay home, but I refused. After a tense breakfast, he took me to the center. I got rid of him by telling him I had business calls to make and that he could help by spending time with the few kids who were there and fixing a leak in the sink in the kitchen. As he went to do what I asked, I tried to work on the books and the other tasks needing my attention. I refused to give him the satisfaction of knowing my leg was throbbing the more I walked on it.

The hours crept by and he checked on me often. Each time he did, I found something else he could do. I knew having him sitting with me would weaken my resolve. Noon couldn’t get here soon enough. At five minutes until twelve, Milena, one of the other adult volunteers, knocked on my door.

“Lark, I hate to disturb you, but there’s a man at the door asking for you. Maniac won’t let him past the front door. I think you need to get out here before there’s bloodshed.”

I got to my feet as fast as I could. Shit, he was supposed to come to the back door. I grabbed my cane and waved for her to proceed me out.

“Thanks, Milena. I’ll handle it. I’m going to be gone for a while. You can call me if you need anything.”

“Sure thing.”

As we got to the main area, I saw Maniac was indeed facing off with my lunch partner. As for his part, Davis wasn’t backing down. He was standing toe-to-toe with Maniac. I rushed over to them as fast as I could. When Davis saw me, he smiled. I heard a growl come from Maniac.

“Hey, gorgeous, it’s good to see you. Mind calling off this guard dog? He’s irritating me,” Davis said with a smirk.

“Maniac, stop it and let Davis in. I’m expecting him.
