Veronica, driving Cassie to the station to catch the train to the airport, glanced at her friend.
âEverything okay? You look a bit strained.â
Cassie nodded. âIâm fine. Bit nervous. Never did like flying much and this is the first time Iâve ever flown on my own.â
âYouâll have a marvellous time in Cape Town. Donât worry about anything back here. Just concentrate on enjoying the time with Polly.â
Cassie tried to follow Veronicaâs advice, but by the time the flight to Cape Town was in the air, thoughts of home were still occupying her mind. Telling herself sternly that âno one is indispensableâ, she hoped sheâd done everything necessary to help keep the place ticking over for the week she was away.
An air hour or so later, when the stewardess arrived with her meal tray, Cassie remembered last nightâs supper with James â and their conversation after heâd confessed heâd fallen in love with her. James was a lovely man, a very dear friend, but she still felt uncertain about moving their relationship up a gear. What if it all went wrong? Their friendship would be over, and she really enjoyed spending time with him. Once back at their table after their waltz, sheâd steeled herself to tell him the truth.
âIâve had a wonderful evening, James, and it will always be a special memory for me.â Sheâd paused before continuing. âYou know I like you a lot. And I look upon you as a good friend â the best. But Iâm not sure about love.â
James was silent for some time, then he sighed. âCassie, your friendship is very precious to me and I donât want to lose it. I had hoped it might be growing into more on your part, but Iâve clearly spoken too soon. Letâs not spoil what, as you say, has been a special evening, through my foolishness.â
Heâd reached across the table and gently stroked her hand. âI just want you to know I do love you, and if you ever feel you can love me in return, Iâll be waiting.â
Now, as she looked out at the floor of clouds beneath the plane as they sped towards the Cape, Cassieâs thoughts returned to the present. She was determined to enjoy this holiday. Hopefully, when she returned home, sheâd be fighting fit and ready to get her life in order. And nearer to knowing how she truly felt about James.
Twelve hours later, as an exhausted Cassie walked into the arrivals lounge of Cape Town International Airport, she was surprised to see Dexter waiting for her.
âThis is a lovely surprise, Dexter. I didnât expect to see you until tomorrow.â
âI thought a friendly face might be appreciated â and a helping hand to get you to your hotel. Iâll have to leave you then for a few hours. Iâve got some organising to do for tomorrow. The first boat is due to cross the line in about twenty-four hours.â
He shook his head in answer to Cassieâs unspoken question.
âNo, sorry. Itâs not Polly, but last I heard, she was still in second place.
