Arthur Waley, the greatest European scholar of Asian religion of the last century and the translator of Qiu Chuji’s travelogue, notes the simple and colloquial nature of these sentences and wonders whether they may have been personally dictated by Chinggis Khan in Chinese.

Qiu Chuji received a similar message in January of 1224, and from there the record of their relationship ends. Who knows for how long Chinggis Khan went on to consider the Way? Historians record that, in the year 1227, while wrapping up his final campaign against the Tangut in central China, Chinggis Khan fell from his horse while hunting. He succumbed to a fever brought on by the accident on August 18 of that year.61 His empire lasted until gunpowder and ocean trade ended the dominance of the steppe nomad, though his brilliant cavalry caracole would be studied and resuscitated by both Allied and Axis tacticians in the tank battles of the Second World War.62

There is no evidence that the khan ever seriously considered giving up the enjoyment of his harem. Genetic estimates claim that Chinggis Khan has sixteen million current descendants.63

And Qiu Chuji never learned of the terrible accident that finally killed the immortal Chinggis Khan, for Qiu Chuji himself went on to join the immortals later that same week, at the advanced (though credible) age of seventy-nine.
