Chapter Eight

Wade and Brant didn’t take her back to the house that night. Although Sonya demurred, reminding them she should be on duty the next day, they wouldn’t let her persuade them. They went to Brant’s apartment.

That place was another eye-opener. “Wow, it’s like walking into a show home,” she said, strolling through the great room. This room alone would swallow the place they shared at the Virginia house and look around for second helpings.

The apartment gave a great view over the river and the buildings on the far side, but she only spared them a glance. The place was all sleek modernity, the colors predominantly masculine browns, navies and creams. Not a home for a child. Even now, when she hadn’t seen her son for months, she thought of Drew first. The floor was polished hardwood, interspersed with thick cream rugs. No child had ever raced through here, or tried to roller-skate from one end of the large space to the other. Which seemed a pity, because it would make an awesome run.

Not a book was out of place, and when she wandered through to the kitchen, it gleamed in pristine perfection. “Have you even made a cup of coffee here?”

“Yes.” Brant sounded amused. He shrugged. “I don’t spend much time here.”

“That seems obvious.” The apartment at the Virginia house was full of tattered paperbacks, furniture set for comfort and convenience rather than artistic effect.

“I keep meaning to make it homier, but all I ever do is come home, eat my takeout, and go to bed.”

“He does,” Wade added. He walked over to a cupboard and threw the door open. “I, on the other hand, cook, watch TV, and live here. For now, at any rate.” The cupboard held some interesting dry goods, the property of someone who obviously knew his way around a wok. Which was handy, because she loved Chinese food, and she couldn’t cook it. Something always went wrong. Drew loved Chinese food, too.

“You can cook for Drew.”

As she said it, she recognized the stupidity of her words. Turning away, she went back to the main room and stared silently out the window. A boat passed, and she watched the tourists busily taking pictures and selfies, intent on their own lives. “I might never see him again. Or he might not like Chinese food by now. How do I know?”

Wade’s hands went around her waist and Brant walked into her field of vision. “We’ll find him,” he said. “I swear it.”

“What if he doesn’t remember me?” That secret fear had haunted her for the last few months. “He’s only four.”

“He’ll remember you.” Wade hesitated. “I remember my mother. She died when I was five years old.”

“Oh!” She put her hand atop one of his. “Oh no, I’m so sorry.”

“One of my fathers was with her. The other father only lived on for my sake.” He spoke quietly, his voice full of regret. “Last year he found somebody else. She’ll never be his breedmate, but they’re happy together, and I’m glad for them both.
