The doors behind her blew open, but Emily couldn’t move as she stared down the one female who had caused her so much pain and grief over the years. “Aren’t you going to stop me?”

Then Ben was there – at her side like he somehow felt the shift in the universe.

Her mother turned from Emily to look up at Ben, and then she frowned slightly as she looked at Emily again. “You’re not mine, are you?”

“I’m sure the version of me that was born here is dead,” Emily told her. “Thanks to you I assume. But you’re exactly like my own mother – ruthless, cruel, and willing to do anything to keep her position of power in the eyrie. I am the best assassin, and she still isn’t satisfied.”

Her mother smiled slightly – no emotion in her eyes at all. “Mm, I doubt that. Not if you’re here.”

Somehow, her mother knew, and she didn’t care that her own daughter was most likely dead, that there was an alternate reality, and somehow that meant Emily was still a failure.

Ben got the paranormals out of the camp with the help of the others while Emily circled her mother – wearing a Nazi uniform like she’d always belonged here.

Did they know what she was?

“You’re not dead,” her mother went on, inspecting her fingernails as the prisoners ran around them like water around a stone. “Although I assume you will be soon, both versions of you. I handed her over to the Nazi’s for experimentation in my place, though that cage is much nicer than this one.”

It was tempting to turn her emotions on and experience fully how terrible this was. But Emily studied her mother and realized it didn’t matter what this female thought – here or back home.

She was no longer a child, and she wasn’t beholden to anyone once her debt was paid to the eyrie.

Not even her mother.

Emily had more love than she’d ever thought she deserved. She no longer had to beg for scraps of affection from random strangers. She didn’t have to go back to a cold life with her parents, yearning and wishing for a warm smile, a pat on the back…something—anything.

She inhaled and stepped into the shadow realm, watching the way her mother’s eyes widened at that. But she kept one foot in reality and grasped her mother’s wrist. Then she yanked her into that glittering darkness, keeping that strange door open for a breath longer than she’d been told to.

More than a breath and…

Those horrific, hungry, desperate shrieks of anger and hate, fear, and curiosity.

“She’s right here, my lovelies,” Emily called, loud and clear into the shadow realm. “I’ve brought you dinner.”

Those hours she and Corbin had spent in the shadow realm had been more than child’s play – as was everything they did.

Emily bit down on her mother’s wrist and then spat the blood onto the glittering ground. “I brought you fresh meat.”

“No!” her mother cried. This fate Emily was leaving her to would not be pleasant.
