I can hear a giggling bursting through the haze of my sleep, and I frown, blinking awake. Lacey is giggling, but before I can ask her what is going on, I’m being lifted off the couch.

As I become airborne, my eyes fly open, and my hands flail around. Oh god. Lacey must have arranged some weird Wild Hawks thing. I should never have stayed the night here.

Right as I’m about to have a full-blown panic attack, my eyes land on Jax’s face. His disapproving face with his lips thinned into a line that tells me he’s pissed off. Like, majorly pissed off. Too pissed off to form words.

He grunts at Lacey, who keeps giggling as she holds the front door open for him. He strides right past my car, depositing me into his truck and buckling me in.

I sit there, sleepily blinking at the occasional headlight, my eyes sliding sideways across the cab at Jax, wondering if I’ve fucked everything up. The worst part is when Jax doesn’t speak the entire way home. He just sits there and vibrates with annoyance. Yeah, I’ve fucked everything up.

We pull into the parking lot at his condo building, and he silently rounds the cab of the truck, unsnapping my seatbelt and lifting me out. If I weren’t so worried by the total silence, I would say something, like “you know, I can walk”. But the silence is starting to get a little eerie. Thankfully we don’t pass any of Jax’s neighbors on our way up to his condo.

Getting inside the condo doesn’t mean I can walk on my own two feet. Oh no, he carries me inside until we’re in his bedroom. Kicking the door shut behind him, he drops me onto the bed. I bounce on my ass, staring up at him until I remember how words work.

“What the hell, Jax?” I explode, surging off the bed and poking his chest with my finger. “I wasn’t in any danger. I wasn’t getting myself into trouble. I was just spending the night at Lacey’s. This is a complete overreaction. You don’t get to go all caveman on me just because you’ve been inside my body.”

Jax’s nostrils flare at my choice of words. I’m sure as hell blushing with the memory of how amazing last night was. There’s absolute silence for a moment, and I think Jax might be frozen, standing at the end of the bed.

In a flash, he is all up in my face. I try to ignore his delicious woodsy scent as I focus on glaring back at him.

“I can’t see any reason why’d you be staying at Lacey’s,” he spits back at me. “It’s not like you’re drunk or otherwise incapacitated. And you took no clothes with you.”

I glare at him silently. Okay, I don’t have a response to that. It’s not like I thought through my flight this morning. I’d ask how he even knew where I was, but I think Lacey might be a traitor.

“I had a very good reason to stay there tonight,” I mutter sullenly at him.
