Choosing an Internet Provider

Everything is set up at home in your office. Now you need one last piece of the picture put into place: your Internet connection. Here’s where you really need to do some research to determine what you need. If you or the whole family like to watch television, then maybe a package deal like AT&T’s Uverse system will work just perfectly. You have all your regular channels and, depending on what level of access you want, you can get tons of channels devoted to movies, sci-fi, history (my favorite!), science—almost anything you want. You can also limit access to the children through parental control systems and make sure they are not ordering pay-per-view movies right and left while you’re not looking.

Part of the Uverse package also includes Internet, access which you can get at different levels of speed. I would recommend getting a high level of it, especially if you are on the Internet often doing research and need to access sites quickly and efficiently. By the way, make use of the “Bookmarks” tag on your Yahoo or Google toolbar at the top of your Internet program, usually found on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. You can also download the toolbars and add on components to help you work faster at getting from place to place on the Internet. Don’t you just love technology?!

The last part of your Uverse package may include a home phone that you can use for your phone calls. There are several different arrangements for that, and you need to decide if you need it, or, if you do, whether you need unlimited local calls only or a full service for an additional monthly fee.

There are a number of different companies offering the same kinds of deals but in different arrangements so you would need to decide if you want satellite, cable, or any other arrangement that might be cheaper, provide only Internet, or have other neat amenities that Uverse might not offer.

Another aspect to consider with Internet and television access is where you live. Though most cities now have access to everything, some people who live in the countryside—or even some suburbs—can only get certain types of services due to the companies’ coverage there. If you have a laptop handy, you can go into the city, sit at a bookstore, and access their Internet. Then pull up a list of services by doing a Google search on “Internet Access.”

A list of companies comes up, and you can check each one on their site by plugging in your zip code to see if they offer access in your area. If not, then move on to the next company. When you hit a company that does offer in your area, study their packages first to have a good idea of what’s involved before calling them. One thing: Don’t let them sell you too many services right off the bat. Start simply but efficiently, and then move up to a higher package if you really like the service.
