Major’s huge hand covers mine over the table. I keep looking at it, waiting for this spell to dissolve. Everything’s so perfect. So perfect it feels like a dream. Like maybe I don’t deserve this, and the other shoe is about to drop.

Though sex was amazing and we fit, I kind of can’t believe it yet. I joined the Shifter Dating App, waiting for a confirmation we’re so much more. Waiting for the moment I’ll be able to dive head-first into this relationship.

Until the moment the results comes, I’m in limbo. Happy, thrilled, but not allowing myself to quite believe it.

“Have you always wanted to be a nurse?” Autumn asks from across the table. She’s a beautiful red-head, bright green eyes focused on me. Though I feel the ugly duckling next to her, Major’s eyes are trained on me. Always on me.

“Yeah. When I was a kid, I used to take care of my dolls. As soon as I learned how to read, I went after biology texts and such. It always fascinated me,” I tell her, and it’s so good to have a normal conversation for a change.

We’re having lunch at this cute place. The furniture is made up of dark wood and deep reds. It must be so romantic under candlelight. But we’re having lunch, taking advantage of Danny being at school, and Major sits next to me. Callum and Autumn smile from across the table. Callum’s a shifter, just like Major, and Autumn’s his mate. They’re the cutest thing, making lovey-dovey faces to one another.

And I want that. Major looks at me with affection across his eyes, but I look away. Afraid of falling too soon.

The chat goes on about me and my story. It turns to Danny, which seems to be everybody’s favorite subject. Callum and Autumn love kids, and they’re dying to have their own. While it doesn’t happen, they’re eager to dote on my son.

“So you didn’t know he was a shifter?” Callum asks, carefully. I know he doesn’t want to offend me, and I appreciate that. It is a sensitive subject.

“No. It makes me feel so freaking dumb. With all the signs...”

“You’re not dumb, baby.” Major brushes a thumb over the back of my hand. “How would you know? We just shift when we’re teenagers.”

“Can you imagine it?” Autumn smiles. “You two having lunch one day and he bursts into a bear.”

“A wolf,” I correct her. Major told me he smelled wolf in Danny. Can’t believe Gordon never told me he’s a freaking shifter. I slept with a wolf next to me for years without knowing.

“A wolf!” She laughs as if that makes it all funnier. “But then, I’m pretty sure I would never notice too. You said he pointed people out and said they were animals, right?”

“Yeah. He said Major was a bear when we arrived in town.”

Autumn shrugs. “I mean, isn’t that kind of thing you expect children to do? I wouldn’t even think there was something wrong about it.”

I smile at her, feeling comforted by the idea.
