Chapter Six

Sunday dinner with Anne and Joseph was fun, and they played cards after the dishes were done. Anne wasn’t a great cook, but Keri knew that would come with practice and time. Not every girl began cooking for her entire family when she was only eight years old.

At first, they teamed up as couples with Harry and Keri playing against Anne and Joseph, and then the women played the men, which Keri found more fun. She and Anne weren’t against distracting the men to win, and they played to win for certain.

After they’d spent most of the day with the other couple, Harry announced it was time for them to go home. Keri was both sad and happy. It had been nice to spend time with the other couple, but as Sunday was her only day off from writing, it was also good to spend some time alone with Harry.

While Harry milked the cows, Keri threw together a quick meal of sandwiches for them to have for supper. Afterward, she wanted to go for a walk, something she and Harry hadn’t been doing much of since she’d increased the number of hours per day she was working.

So after the dishes were done, the couple set out for a walk on some of the dirt paths through the ranch, where the men rode their horses. As they walked, Harry pointed straight ahead. “We own the land for as far as the eye can see. I always felt so boxed in back east because we didn’t have a lot of land. We were wealthy, but living in the city, limited the amount of land we could hold.”

“Do you ever miss your home?”

He shook his head. “Never. I find that Wyoming and being a rancher suit me so much better than being a banker ever did.”

“Wait, I didn’t realize you were a banker for a while.”

“Almost a year when my father died, and I decided to leave. I miss Mother at times, but truly not very often. She was very rigid in her beliefs of how things should be, and I prefer to be a little more relaxed. For instance, she would shudder if she saw what I wear to church every Sunday. Back east I was always in a suit and tie. Here, I can wear a suit, but I usually just wear one of my plaid shirts and a pair of Levis.”

She smiled. “I like how your bottom looks in a pair of Levis.”

He was shocked for a moment, and then started to laugh, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer. “You do keep me on my toes, Keri.”

“I do my best.” She opened her mouth to tell him about some of the failed wedding nights she was writing and then thought better of it. She knew he didn’t approve of her writing something so risqué. “I love the countryside here. Are there any wild berries I should be watching for?”

“All the usual. Raspberries, and cherries, and chokecherries, and blackberries.
