Chapter Six

Mrs. Hamilton was quite happy to let Amelia rustle around in her kitchen and make pie filling that afternoon. Trying to think ahead, Amelia made a huge batch of pie filling, using all three pails of blackberries. She’d still have plenty of blackberries after a day of cooking though. She felt like they’d barely scratched the surface, and it was glorious to see there wouldn’t be a shortage of sweets. Amelia had never known such wealth!

While she cooked, Mrs. Hamilton cleaned. The boys were tucked away in their beds for their naps, and Amelia took the opportunity to roll out a crust for the pie.

When Mrs. Hamilton returned to the kitchen, Amelia asked about canning supplies. “Oh, of course! I’ll run and get them for you.”

When Mrs. Hamilton came back with the supplies, she immediately washed them and got them ready to use while Amelia stirred her pie filling. She dipped a spoon into her mixture and tasted a quick bite after blowing on it vigorously. There was no burn like hot fruit burn. “Oh, that’s perfect. And we’ll be able to have it throughout the winter. I’ll put enough for one pie into each jar.”

“We’ll put enough for one pie into each jar,” Mrs. Hamilton corrected. “I’m starting to worry you’re going to do all my work, and I won’t have a way to make a living!”

Amelia laughed. “It won’t happen. I enjoy having you here too much. We work well together, and there will be times I’ll need a lot of help.” Amelia started spooning the pie filling into the clean jars.

“You have no idea how much you’re going to be appreciated in this house.”

“I already love it here,” Amelia said. “What are you making for supper?” She’d noticed some steaks that look to have been pounded to within an inch of their lives on the counter.

“Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I figure we’ll do a blackberry pie for dessert!”

“Oh, yes we will! There’s a lot in that garden that’s already ready to be harvested. I noticed that a lot of strawberries died right on the vine. I wish you’d had help before I got here.”

“The boys picked enough for us to have a strawberry shortcake, and they filled their tummies a few times.”

“Then I suppose it’s not all a huge waste. Next year they’ll be put to good use.”

Soon the jars were filled, and Mrs. Hamilton said she’d finish the canning process. “I can’t let you do all the work!”

Amelia laughed. “I’m going to put on my bonnet and get some blueberries then. All of the blackberries aren’t quite ripe, but they will be by the end of the week. I sure would like to have lots of both set aside for winter.”

“Did you learn to garden and can at the orphanage?”

“Oh, yes. It was part of what was expected of the girls. The boys did the weeding and occasionally, they would hunt for meat for our suppers, but mostly, they made sure the yard was kept up and the food was eaten.
