Chapter Seven

Thankfully, George slunk back to Massachusetts, and they didn’t have to deal with him again. As the months passed, Diana learned more and more about being a wife in the west. There were so many things she’d never learned that she quickly became adept at under Keri’s tutelage.

Diana stood by the window, her gaze fixed on the snow-covered landscape of the ranch. She watched with a barely contained excitement as the morning sun began to melt the snow, revealing patches of green grass beneath.

“Look, Keri,” she said, gesturing to the scene outside. “The snow is melting.”

Keri, Harry’s wife, and creator of the mail-order bride romances, smiled warmly at Diana. “Yes, it happens every year!”

As Diana continued to watch the transformation outside, an idea that had been slowly forming in her mind began to solidify. She knew that Kevin deserved more than just being a ranch foreman. He had shown exceptional care and kindness to both people and animals during their time together, qualities that would make him an excellent doctor.

“Keri,” she began hesitantly, “I’ve been thinking about something lately. You know how skilled Kevin is when it comes to taking care of the ranch and all the animals?”

“Of course,” Keri replied. “He’s got a real gift for it.”

“Exactly. That’s what I’ve been thinking too. And it made me wonder... What if he could use those skills to help even more people?” Diana paused, her heart pounding in her chest as she gathered the courage to voice her thoughts. “What if he went to medical school and became a doctor?”

Keri’s eyes widened at the suggestion, and she studied Diana’s face for a moment before responding. “That’s an interesting idea. But medical school is expensive, and it would mean leaving the ranch. I’d lose you and Harry would lose Kevin!”

“I know,” Diana admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I believe in him, Keri. And I think he could make a real difference in this world as a doctor.” Her eyes welled up with unshed tears, but she wiped them away quickly. She didn’t want to be seen as weak or overly emotional; she wanted to show that she was strong and capable of supporting Kevin in any endeavor.

Keri reached out and squeezed Diana’s hand. “It’s clear how much you care about him. I’ll talk to Harry, and we’ll see what we can do to help make this dream a reality for Kevin.”

“Thank you,” Diana whispered, her heart swelling with love and gratitude for her new family. As she watched the snow continue to melt outside the window, the image of Kevin as a doctor filled her mind, and she couldn’t help but smile at the thought of the bright future they could share together.

Diana watched as Kevin guided his horse across the yard, his muscular frame silhouetted against the setting sun. The last remnants of winter ice clung stubbornly to the earth, but the first signs of spring were evident in the buds on the trees and the occasional chirping of a brave bird.
